Theater may also be defined as a set of various forms of fine art presented to audiences through various techniques. The word originated from the Greek language. Infact, modern theater borrows elements like technical terminology and categorization of arts into genres from ancient Greek drama.

The process of producing a piece of art or theatre involves parties from different professions. Some of the most commonly involved professionals are directors, actors, playwrights, and a technical production team. The technical production team comprises of sound designers, production managers, stage managers, lighting designers, set designers, video designers, dramaturg, fight directors, and stage composers. The collaborative efforts of all these professionals are put together to produce the final art ready for presentation to the audience.

Stagecraft is a term used to refer to all video, film, and theatrical aspects involved in the production process. It covers such aspects as makeup, stage management, hanging and focusing of lights, construction and rigging of scenery, sound mixing and recording, and procurement of props. Design and procurement of costumes also falls under stagecraft. Normally stagecraft is handled by a single professional although in modern days, this is changing fast.

Theatrical music, tragedy, drama, and comedy are some of the forms of art that make up theatre. Drama by its definition specializes in presenting specific modes of fiction as performances. Dance, music, and drama normally go together. On the other hand, spoken dialogues and songs both form part of musicals. The relationship between theatrical music and theatre is very close. As such, music has always been part of theatre for centuries.

Modern music theatre communicates to audiences by combining different elements like dances, spoken dialogues, and music. Theatre came up during the early twentieth century. Genres like vaudeville, variety, comic opera, and music hall were the roots of its emergence. In comedies, people are told stories through humor. Sometimes theatres may deliberately express taboo, bleak, or controversial subjects through humor in what is called black comedy.

Both companies and individuals can own theatres. In most cases, companies work on one piece of work before proceeding to another. All current works must be retired before new work is taken on. However, this is not always the case because some companies work on several pieces at the same time. A piece is retired after several years of repeated performance. Repertory companies is the name given to such companies.

Unions exist in the theatre industry too. Directors, actors, managers, and other experts in the industry have their own unions they are required to join. Membership to a union is a requirement in some theaters before joining.
