A chinrest is a carved piece of wood or a molded plastic that is attached to the body of a violin to properly position the jaw and chin on the instrument. There are a lots of material a chinrest can be made, the most common ones are made up of ebony, rosewood or plastic. This attachment is now already considered as a standard part of a violin due to benefit it provides.

Equilibrium is the key factor to ensure that you perform well throughout your performance. This is why, the chin rest was made. Although there are different violin chinrest styles, they all have the same purpose. To obtain the perfect chinrest, it needs a lot of time and patience. You need to try and try until you got what is right for you. Today, we will understand what we need to look for in a chinrest. This will save you a lot of time trying to fit every single one of them.

To start, you need to select the style of chin rest that you want. It is up to you whether you would like to go for an across the tailpiece rest or the rest that sits on the left hand part of the tailpiece. Mostly, the selection depends upon how long your arms are.

For violinists that have shorter arms or an individual who has narrow shoulders, perfectly benefit with the across the tailpiece one. This sort of rest will help position the central part of the violin close enough to the left shoulder. This will decrease the distance the left arm much reach for it to be able to play the instrument properly.

Some people tend to have bonier jaws. If this is the case, it is better if you select a rest that is well curved. In the contrary, if you have full figured jaws, you might need a lengthier and a not so elevated ridge. It is essential that you select that perfect curvature depending on your jaw structure to prevent complications and injuries in the long run especially if you are playing in a longer period of time.

Sores and muscle strains are the most common problems most violinists have. This is because they mistakenly use rests that is not right for them. Obtaining this device is an investment for wonderful performance without those complications.

A fiddlers neck or also known as a violin hickey is a condition that usually distinguished by redness and inflammation on the left side of the neck of an individual. Generally, the main cause of this condition is constant friction and pressure. In a violinist community, they usually call this as battle scars which indicates a skill of an individual due to constant practice.

All in all, those are the important points you should be considering. There are lots of other things you might need to look at. Basically, it depends upon what you are looking in a rest. If you are a person that is allergic in some types of woods, to be safe, you can use a plastic made one.

Bottom line is, always look for chinrests that best suits what you need and you are comfortable with it. If possible, go for high standard equipments. This may cost you a bit but at least you are certain that it will provide wonderful benefits.
