An Overview Of Arts Effect On Society In Historical Context

By Catalina Nielsen

Most art has a special way of displaying truths and ideas to the public that most mediums can not do. This may be various ideas or thoughts about humanity, the world, religion or more specific things. These revolutionary truths and ideas can be so entirely profound that that through time arts effect on society is even felt in rural areas.

Many people are able to make these connections because it is presented in such a way that it often becomes universal in the mind of the viewer. Over time as these ideas become more universal they can motivate people to action. When people follow this action based on new ideas and truths it can have the effect of changing the world everywhere. The united states gaining independence, the war against slavery and civil rights are only a few historical examples of this in action.

The awareness the public gains from art can only enrich cultures when the public takes action based on these ideas which are presented in the art. There is also an opportunity for this to be used negatively. The Third Reich attempted to use this method as they marched their war machine across world. Even though assorted forms of art could make society a better place the process requires both time and effort.

To begin with any art must be seen by the public in general. This could be paintings, music, films and even books. As it moves out into the world the people it influences will grow exponentially. Art can only change things when it is experienced. Films should be watched, books read over, pictures and paintings looked at. Some pieces of art may get destroyed or banned before this happens.

One of the movies that defined women's rights was the movie deep throat. Though it was pornographic in nature and banned in many places, women everywhere embraced it and the freedoms it portrayed. There is much speculation that had this influential movie not gone mainstream women's rights could have been set back a decade or more.

One of the most famous painters Van Gogh did the starry night around 1889. This one painting became a driving factor behind the fledgling impressionist movement. By tossing caution into the wind, many artists could incorporate a more realistic poetic symmetry to what they saw or felt.

Still photographs can be some of the most powerful weapons used across the planet. Around 1963 a nine year old girl got photographed running away from a napalm attack by the South Vietnamese. This picture showed the stark hard truth of the Vietnam war for millions of people. It rose above the ideas of wrong or right and became a significant rallying point for individuals to prevent American involvement in Vietnam.

Most influential art also involves a connection between the viewer and society. This must happen for arts effect on society to be realized. Even things from the past can resurface and be looked at in a different way. This is how cultures can potentially evolve over time into something greater.
