A Swedish Female Singer Is On The Rise

By Carmella Watts

Scandinavia has produced many of the finest musicians known today. Norway, Finland, and Sweden have placed themselves on the map for its excellent rock music and culture. Sweden especially has produced some of the finest musical legends, both male and female. Particularly, the Swedish female singer is likely to impress the rest of the world.

Roughly four decades ago disco was the most popular musical genre in the world. The female vocalist in a group called ABBA brought a disco fever to the world. Commercially that group become the most successful in the history of the pop genre. ABBA topped record charts and sold millions of albums between the nineteen seventies and the nineteen eighties and as such Frida Lyngstad was the most successful singer in the world for that period of time.

ABBA is only one instance of exemplary Swedish musicians. Other artists have come, gone, and left their mark on the music scene as well. During the same time period Blue Swede placed number one on the Billboard Hit 100. They a hit in both the British and American charts in the mid nineteen seventies.

Several years later, the rock and metal scene began to emerge and one of its stars was a male group called Europe. The eighties hair band made it to the top of the music chart in twenty-six nations. Europe was the most accomplished and lucrative hard rock band of all time because they sold an astounding twelve millions copies of their first and second album.

Some of Europe's contemporaries included a songwriter and rapper named Neneh Cherry. Neneh was a vocalist, disc jockey, writer, and rapper who made some hit songs of her own. The exceptional Marie Fredrikkson was another woman to have made top charts. As part of the duo, Roxette, Marie was the vocalist accomplice to Per Gessle, a singer and guitarist.

Selling tens of millions of albums, bands like Ace of Base and the Cardigans found worldwide fame in the following couple of decades. Although there were and continue to be many male musicians, females have made an impressive impact in Sweden. Known for their single hits, artists like Meja, Emilia Teddybears, and Leila K. Made their dreams come true and gained many fans. Not all of these women are natives of Scandinavia, one in particular known as Laleh, is an Iranian-Swedish musician who fled Iran with her family when she was just a year old.

Among the top musicians in Sweden are female songwriters, singers, and bands. Most recently a sister duo from the suburbs of Stockholm emerged with a band called First Aid Kit. They have been writing and singing folk music professionally for over six years. A unique character is Sophia Somajo, she makes Chinese techno from home and has become world famous for her self produced and recorded techno music.

Most of the well known artists we know did not come from a musical background, merely became stars through their own desires and perseverance. Stars like Lykke Li were born to a family of musicians and grew into their talents. These are some of the prime examples of people who could be characterized as a Swedish female singer.
