Issues Regarding Establishment Of The Medical Marijuana Pharmacy

By Terrie Joyner

Most people are aware of the controversies regarding the establishment of a medical marijuana pharmacy. Many acceptable arguments have been made on both sides of this controversy, and these arguments are coming from doctors, patients, lawmakers, and the general public. An individual perspective on the topic often comes largely from their own personal experience with the substance.

There is evidence suggesting that cannabis is useful for many medical conditions including glaucoma, cancer, and multiple sclerosis. Patients who have benefited from this form of treatment swear by it, and the doctors who prescribe it agree. There are still health care professionals who claim there is no medical benefit to it, although the question must raised as to why further study and testing has not been conducted.

A huge aspect of the controversy is the use of cannabis to treat gastrointestinal problems that result from chemotherapy. Even more inflammatory, there have been claims made that hemp oil can cure many forms of cancer. In fact, the individuals responsible for administering hemp oil are now in prison, much to the outrage of many people who believe further study is called for.

Some individuals in government who believe the laws regarding cannabis should be either repealed, or at the least it should be decriminalized. Some people on the other end of the spectrum regard it as a gateway drug. They believe that using it for any purpose sets a dangerous precedent, and that it will encourage further abuse of the substance.

The issue is extremely polarizing both socially and politically. The potential for it to be a real hot-bed issue of state rights versus Federal regulation exists. There are states who have legalized it for medicinal use and manufacture, and Federal law enforcement has usurped those states and raided the dispensaries, often incarcerating those who were lawfully engaged in the business.

The fact is, hemp was used previously for a number of things including clothing, paper, and medicine. It was a giant cash crop for both North and South America at one time, and was one of the biggest exports in the sixteenth century. There were twentieth century propaganda films released depicting it as dangerous, and those films were released by the pharmaceutical industry, making many question what their agenda really was.

There is also the costly war on drugs which has been waged for more than twenty years, and many in government believe this has been an utter failure. Some say that it criminalizes average citizens, and empowers criminals to engage in a destructive black market trade in the substance. This issue becomes even more inflammatory when the citizens incarcerated are patients suffering from cancer, AIDS, MS, or any of a number of other conditions which it is believed to provide relief from.

There are several states which have legalized the medical marijuana pharmacy. The issue still rages on, both socially and politically. There are many who believe this form of medicine is superior to a lot of other pharmaceuticals, and there are those who claim that it simply legalizes drug abuse.
