The Process Of Campus Crisis Response Plan

Disaster is seen as unforeseen future event that can possibly harm people or damage the structures around. Their chances of occurrence cannot easily be predicted. This is the sole reason why institutions should be equipped with mitigation strategy to handle such situations. Institutions should adequately prepare their campus crisis response plan and also allocate their resources to deal with possible emergencies. By doing this they should their support and commitment to deal with disasters.

They are generally events affecting or events that have already affected the going concern of some institutions and definitely tinted their reputation. Some of major characteristics of disaster management plan are basically proper communication, proper preparation and awareness. It is of great importance for institutional staff, visitors, students and other related parties to be educated on how to deal with crisis situations or how to behave in case they find themselves in a disaster situation.

Some disasters can have adverse impact on environment, cause serious damage on the property and also disrupt that normal college operation. All the plans of any college must have objectives. Some of the main objectives include providing the college and the public at large the assurance or guarantee that emergency response and emergency preparedness is considered to be of high priority with all the relevant leadership. The support actually begins with chancellor and all the relevant senior leadership concerned.

Most of the times crisis are sudden and also unforeseen or sometimes others have varying warning periods. The strategy is basically aimed at being flexible to generally accommodate risks of all kinds, duration and magnitudes. The college crisis management strategy is usually put into action whenever a disaster, natural or man made disrupts or interferes with normal institution operations, creates adverse damages, poses danger to life or when such events occurs just within the college community.

The support of any strategy in a college should begin with the chancellor then go down to other concerned parties or shareholders. The strategy is used mainly to train or educate institutional supervisors on how to handle emergency situations. It is recommended for universities to be always prepared to deal with any kind of situation when it happens. They should have an efficient pro active disaster reaction management strategy. The management of such institutions should ensure the college resources are well allocated and utilized.

Some of the crisis or disasters a college may be exposed to include natural calamities such as snow, ice storms and tornadoes. Other disasters can be incidents like chemical explosions, release of poisonous materials or hazardous materials, epidemics, power outages, water shortages pandemics and many other emergencies pertaining health.

The disaster response team has three priorities although every situation has its own special response. The first priority is to control that disaster or to secure emergency help. Under this priority still, the team is required to evacuate students from all affected areas, make sure that any injured student or person gets immediate medical assistance, rescue any student trapped under the collapse building and create effective communication network.

The team responsible for managing crisis is usually composed of chancellor, all the senior or top leadership team, chief of police and not forgetting assistant vice chancellor. Vice chancellor academic affairs together with vice chancellor administrative services should be actively involved. It is advisable that all the stakeholders be involved when coming up with such strategies.
