A Look At Comic Book Storage

By Janine Hughes

Collectors of comics often find it thrilling to locate those that are rare and valuable. Some folks enjoy purchasing and holding on to popular comics until they are collectors items. If your plan is to collect and preserve their value, proper comic book storage is vital. A collection that is in good condition can often be valued at thousands of dollars. For that reason it is important to store your collection correctly.

Folks who are comic collectors take pride in their most popular and valuable books. These are the collectors who go to auctions and various trade shows to look for treasures. Those who own large collections will often display them at convention. Books that slightly worn and have been correctly stored will have a high value. Learning how to store books to ensure limited damage through the years is important.

A controlled environment is vital when storing a comic book collection. A storage area needs to be kept at a consistent temperature preventing it from getting too warm or too cool. Renting a storage space is an option, however it is important that the unit is temperature controlled. Temperature control keeps the comics safe from moisture that causes mildew and mold.

Basements and attics are not appropriate places to store your comics because temperatures can vary. Because a closet typically has the appropriate temperature and sunlight free they can make good storage spaces. It is important that you consider the climate in which you live. If you live in an area that is very hot and you have no central air conditioner, storing at home is not a good idea.

If storing books for display they are best stored upright. The upright position will prevent bending that may warp the book pages. You may also enclose the comics in clear sleeves that protect them from dust. It is also best not to put too many comics on a single shelf since crowding can cause damage. If you do not want to display your comics you can store them in boxes made from cardboard that is acid free.

Specially made acid free boxes are designed specifically to store comics and are available in two sizes. The short sized box will accommodate 100 comic books while the larger box holds three times more. You can find the boxes by searching online which give you the opportunity to compare prices.

You may have other reasons than preserving value for making sure you store your collection properly. For instance, the readability of the comics is preserved when stored correctly. You might plan to pass your collection down to children and grandchildren. When you store them properly you are ensuring that their value will increase and that they will be preserved for the future.

Making sure your books are cared for properly will keep them from becoming damaged. No matter if you are going to keep your comics, take them to auction, or display at a trade show, it is vital to store them correctly. When you correctly preserve the collection its readability and value will be maintained.
