Tips In Choosing A Violin Chinrest

By Claudine MacDonald

Most string players use the violin chinrest that came with their instruments when they bought it. What they do not realize is that they fit only a few people. Using an ill fitting attachment can affect your performance. Faces of people have different structures and that is why you can also see that there are a variety of styles for this attachment. You need to find the right one for you.

Ill fitting rests affect the performance you have and also your comfort. You will experience problems like sores, aches and clenching. This would come from the pressure that your chin places on a portion of your neck. If you feel all these during and after you play, it would be a good time for you to head to shops and purchase one that fits you better.

Getting a good fit on the attachment that you have would be quite beneficial since you get to play better. You will be able to have proper posture. You also get better support on your instrument and you body.

It is really important that you be the one to look for your attachment yourself. It is not wise to shop online either because even the same type but a different manufacturer would differ in the fit still. You need to try each yourself and note if it feels comfortable and right for you.

One consideration is the height that the chin rest has. One can know that is it of the right height when a finger can be placed in between the jaw and the rest. Look straight forward when testing this out. If one has to nod low to get in contact, the height is just too short. If the nod would be shallow then it is high.

The flexibility on your shoulder should also be looked into. Players with great flexibility on their shoulders prefer to use ones that get mounted left to the tailpiece of the violin. Those who are less flexible use rests mounted a bit over the tailpiece. You have to note what would be most comfortable to you as well.

There really are a lot of variations for chin rests. You can find those that have deep arcs while some are almost flat. You can choose one that is mounted on the left of the instrument or on the center. You really need to look for one that fits the contour of your jaw well and causes no discomfort.

Using a well fitting rest would be beneficial for the health and also for the performance you deliver. With a good one, you can free the left collarbone of any static tension and you would be more free to move. You also bring the weight closer to your body so the instrument is easier and much lighter to carry. You can then move your arms, you also improve your scroll height.

Be sure that you have the perfect violin chinrest. Choose it in the same way you would for your instrument. This can be really time consuming but well worth it.
