Things To Consider When Doing Guitar Intonation Setup

By Casandra Cotton

Learning to play a guitar is a lot easier than tuning one, more so when it is guitar intonation setup you have to deal with. It involves so many factors that need to be understood and if not done right, may cause some injuries and more damage to your instrument. Before you get started, here are some pointers you might want to familiarize yourself with.

A higher action or more distance from the string to the fret will produce a sharper than flat sound. This is so because the cords are stretched farther. The problem you will encounter here is a difficulty in getting in tune, sometimes you have it, the next time you do not. What you need to do is to set up your instrument all over again to get just the right height and make sure you have the desired length.

Excessive neck arch is something you have to worry about. This only happens when you tighten the cord too much. This creates great pressure that will cause the neck to bend. Another bad effect this makes is the increased distance in the fret and string. It actually causes so many problems as it may loosen the wood work. To remedy this, you should make adjustments in your tie up bar.

When it comes to the saddle, you want it to be resolutely situated on the actual musical instrument's bridge. If it is loose, it would appear to be leaning frontward. This would cause the cord to shortened making a sharper inflection. To solve this problem, you really have to substitute the instrument with new parts to get the exact fit.

Next to look at is the saddle crown. What you do not want to see is deep notches as it will change the length of the string. When this happens, it will be impossible to get it in tune because it is the string itself that is affected. There are two things you can do here. You can try to re-emerge the saddle or replace it completely.

Another common problem every guitar owner experiences is a worn out fret. Overtime, continuous rubbing of the string will thin it out. It will no doubt affect the inflection as it modifies the cord length and height. A damage fret can be remedied but for cases with acute damage, you have no more alternatives but to replace it.

Tackled above was the height of fret to the string as a consequence of some problem. The quality of the string is just as significant when assembling your instrument. Going for unknown brands may be cost effective at first but they are known to cause more sound issues eventually. You should think about getting superior brands as they will last.

Now you should have a basic idea of the ins and outs of guitar intonation setup. Doing it by your self is not a feat without a solution. It will however require a lot of patience to learn all the concepts and principles first. Do not hesitate to seek assistance from professionals because they are the best people to get advice from.
