Importance Of Church Stage Lighting Design

By Enid Hinton

Light plays a crucial role in how we perceive Architecture. Not only does it enable us to see spaces within a building, but also defines the zones and boundaries of the building, expands and accentuates rooms, creates and delineates one area from another. The aesthetic value of built forms is best appreciated by the presence of light inside and outside the building, making it safe to assume that light is the soul of Architectural model, church stage lighting design being the most magnificent of them all.

A house of God is no ordinary building. It is built symbolically, whereby each of its structure is used to represent something. It is a social hub that gathers people thus the space is designed for masses. The function of a church is to gather people for worship and link them to their creator and aid in other religious functions.

The stage is an important spot in the house of worship. It is where the leaders seats and where the congregation faces. All functions inside it are centered at the stage. As a designer of the space, or the architect, one is prompted to give it the attention and prominence it deserves.

The lighting in a worshiping place is the most integral part of its architecture. It is an abstraction to a higher power. It represents a supreme being. As the bible says that Jesus is the light of the world, most of the designs for the house of worship will tend to emphasize this statement.

Brightness in a house of worship expresses how the platform will appear to the people inside. The walls in the house of worship can only change the space but not the form. Hence, a glowing church makes people perceive that they are close to God.

The design in the house of worship strives to have the following outcomes. One is the beauty. The stage should be in a way that it is spacious and attracts the eyes of the congregation. A large space means better freedom of either leaders or choir members to perform their duties. Moreover, it makes the house of God brighter and lively.

Secondly is the comfort of the eyes. Visual discomfort would be caused by admitting too much and resulting to sparkles. This is resulted by too much luminosity from the openings and high illumination levels from reflecting surfaces. It reduces the ability of individuals to see details. Uncontrolled glowing would not allow the leaders to read the holy books. It can also cause eye problems to the users of that particular space.

The third consideration would be energy efficiency. It minimizes electrical energy costs. One would choose to admit natural light during the day as it is free. At night, one opts for energy saving artificial illumination.

Therefore, the design as seen is very important for the outcomes of the house of God in present and future time. Luminescence has the ability to bring people hope and help them forget about the problems that they left behind. All other functions of light are important but the psychological effect is the most important. People will forget everything but will not forget how the space made them feel. This is what the house of the house of God wishes to achieve.
