A new Superman movie is already in pre-production, just five years after Bryan Singer made Superman Returns, but the two projects are not related. The producers have decided to start the series again with an all new re-telling of the story, and have hired a new director to lead the way, as well as a whole new cast.
Originally created in 1932 by Canadian artist Joe Shuster and American writer Jerry Siegel, Superman was the comic strip that was led the way with the superhero genre. It did not take long for it to capture the imaginations of America, and very soon a radio show was developed and became very popular. This was followed in 1941 by an animated series, which ran in cinemas before the main feature and starred the voice actors from the radio show. Then in 1948 Kirk Alyn became the first man to play Superman in a live-action serialized version in the cinemas.
For the next three decades Superman would be a favorite on TV with the famous George Reeves show and more animated versions. Finally in 1978, a new full length feature movie was made, directed by Richard Donner. The late Christopher Reeve would wear the famous cape, and he would do this in another three movies. For the next twenty years though, the stories would only ever make it to the small screen in the form of Lois and Clark and the more recent, Smallville.
Then in 2006 Bryan Singer made his version, which was almost like a sequel and homage to Richard Donner's first two movies. Playing Superman was a new face, Brandon Routh, while others in the cast included Kevin Spacey, Kate Bosworth and James Marsden. The movie got good reviews and won a few awards, but was not a great success at the box office.
The man who will play Clark Kent and his superhero alto ego this time, is another actor who may not be familiar to everyone. Henry Cavill is a British actor who is best known for his role as Charles Brandon in the TV series, The Tudors.
But he has been on the verge of stardom for a few years now and was even considered for the earlier Bryan Singer movie. Other rumors were that he was considered as Batman and James Bond before Christian Bale and Daniel Craig got their roles respectively, and he was also Stephanie Meyer's first choice for Twilight, but was too old when filming began.
Kevin Costner and Diane Lane are the big stars who have been signed up to play his parents, which has many fans excited. More recently it was announced that Amy Adams would be playing Lois Lane. Much of the other casting is still being kept under wraps until closer to the film's release date.
Zack Snyder is the man directing this new movie, currently known as Superman: Man of Steel. He is of course the director who was responsible for movies like 300, Watchmen and the recent Sucker Punch. All of those titles were known for their stylized compositions and visual effects. David S. Goyer, who wrote the Blade movies, Batman Begins, The Dark Knight and the upcoming Ghost Rider sequel, is responsible for the screenplay.
