Tony Scott is one of the better action directors in the game today. He clearly has a distinct style; it is easy to recognize a Tony Scott film. He also seems to have an affinity for certain actors. Denzel Washington seems to be his favorite, while he also enjoys making movies with Gene Hackman.
This article will discuss what I consider to be the greatest Tony Scott films of his career.
One movie that I will definitely include on this list is True Romance. Supposedly, up and coming screenwriter Quentin Tarantino (this was the early 90s) sold this script to the minimum amount to a studio who put Tony Scott at the helm. Scott may have directed this movie, but its got Tarantino written all over it.
Man On Fire with Denzel Washington is another great film. Denzel is as good as it gets as the hero who plays by his own rules in this film. Dakota Fanning also is great as the supporting actress, although I always thought that swimming was an odd sport choice for her.
Crimson Tide is another awesome Tony Scott film. Like Man On Fire, this movie also stars Denzel Washington. Gene Hackman plays a controversial character in this film and this movie is as suspenseful as any film I have seen in recent memory.
The Last Boy Scout is another interesting film that happens to be directed by Tony Scott. I was a little young to fully appreciate this film when I saw it for the first time, but upon watching it again recently, I realized that is a great movie.
Top Gun definitely makes the cut for me. Few movies have as much nostalgic value as Top Gun has for many middle aged men. I don't know why there have been so few air force based films since this one. Maybe it is because it is tough to beat Top Gun.
After you go through his catalog, it is clear that Tony Scott is an accomplished director and has had his fair share of great films.
