Things You Should Know Before Learning How To Use Alcohol Ink

By Daniel Allen

Everyone the world over have a creative streak running through them. Whether this streak lasts for a lifetime or it is there intermittently, people use different mediums to express themselves. You reading right now may be thinking of how to use alcohol ink to express your own artistic interests. Before you do start out in using this medium, it may be good to know a thing or two about it may be good to know a thing or two about it in this article.

For starters this ink is dye based, which means that the colorant that gives it color is fully dissolved in whatever liquid suspension that is used. As such, there will be no need for you to shake it and get any particles that may have settled to the bottom, since there will not be any. This is in exception of course to colors with metallic and pearl sheen.

As this ink is basically alcohol based, this will mean that this kind of ink will dry up very quickly, sometimes within seconds of touching the surface. Once it does dry, it will be basically be waterproof and will stay on for a very long time, if not forever.

These inks must always be used on surfaces that they can glide across. This means that non porous and sturdy surfaces should be used such as ceramic, glass or plastic and not porous ones like paper or wood. Paper and wood will absorb the ink and the real magic of this medium will not be seen.

These inks come in three groups of colors, being light colored paste ones, regular jewel or standard colors and also earthy dark color tones. Light colored inks will tend to spread out more when used due to the higher alcohol content and darker colors tend to clump up more due to it having less. In essence because of this higher content of alcohol, the lighter colors will tend to dry up faster. T

If you are just starting out with this medium do not go all out and and buy all the colors in the spectrum. There are small starter packs in one half ounce bottles and four ounce bottles. One half ounce bottles are really the best value for money as they can last for quite a long time. Also you can save more money by getting darker colors for you can dilute them to get lighter shades and hues.

As you begin to play around with this medium, you will notice that these are inks that do not mix well. In fact they will push each other apart and leave distinct edges with each other. One can compare the effect to that of a stained glass painting so one should keep this characteristic in mind when thinking of an overall design.

When your piece of art does finally dry, it will be very resilient and even waterproof. It can last for a while as long as you keep it away from alcohol based liquids and such. Coming into contact with such liquids will reactivate the colors and make them move around again, ruining your creation.
