What You Need To Know About Picking Ballet Classes Los Angeles For Your Child

By Cynthia Thomas

If your child is interested in dance, you may be wondering how to find the right class for them. There are many different styles of dance and many studios that are offering lessons. You need to consider each child individually since different kids need different things from a dance teacher. Here are some tips that you can use to find the right ballet classes Los Angeles for your child.

Ballet has been around for hundreds of years. Many of the terms and names for different positions and steps are in French. This is because much of this art form was developed in France. It has since split off into other teaching styles including Russian and Cecchetti.

The age and experience level of individual classes is an important thing to check on. Classes that try and put different ages and experience levels together may not be a good fit and may actually end up with your child getting injured. Some moves are very difficult to do especially for young children who may not have much muscular strength.

Certified teachers are an important thing to look for. You may want to ask about what teaching courses they have taken and how long they have been an instructor. You want to make sure that their background is specifically in ballet rather than in other dance forms.

It is a good idea to talk with your child as well to find out what they want to happen as a result of taking classes. Some kids want to be able to have fun and get some exercise while others want to make a career out of being a dancer. The classes that will be chosen for each of these situations are completely different. It is important to know how involved your child wants to be since a class that is too intense may be intimidating for your child.

A studio's location may make it a bad choice for you. It may not be a problem when kids are little to have one class a week and have to travel back and forth in traffic. If your child becomes very involved in this art form, however, it may mean that you are traveling to the same studio day after day. Travel time can really add up and so you need to be careful about this.

You may think that expenses will be limited to clothing that your child will wear to class and perhaps a costume that they will wear in a recital or performance. You may be surprised to learn that there can be other costs as well that you may not anticipate. These can include competition fees and dance exam fees. A studio may also charge you for extra practice sessions or individual classes. You need to ask about all of the fees at the beginning of the year.

If you want to try and find a list of schools that you can check out, make sure you look online or speak to other parents whose children are involved in dance. You will be able to then visit individual studios and see if you like what they have to offer. While it can be nice to watch studios compete you may not get a clear idea of what their classes are like. Once you have seen some classes in action you can tell whether or not they are right for your young dancer.
