Types And Scope Of Narrative Drawings

By Lelia Hall

Art can be used to tell a story as a sequence of events unfolding over time. Narrative drawings and art employs the power of visual images to evoke emotions, ignite imaginations, and capture cultural aspirations and truths. It has a great ability to narrate stories across different cultures and preserve for future generations.

It call for or requires some knowledge to understand the meaning of this art. It is very complicated to read and understand the ancient pictures since they are usually not organized in a systematic way like the words on a page. They can unfold in many different perspectives at once.

Coming up with a story or making a story clear requires sophisticated conventions. The descriptive art has been used long ago in the history of mankind. Numerous releases show the history of narratives of hunting or battle. The early people used illustrations like tracks to indicate the movement of prey or enemy which is similarly used in today's art whereby diagrammatic artworks are used to depict some information.

Descriptive artists use different types of images to represent their descriptive action. The static images in a medium do not by themselves tell stories since stories are told over time and pictures are seen all at once. However, all descriptive arts have something in common. Different cultures have developed distinctive ways to distinguish descriptive action from pictures.

During ancient past, before the introduction of literacy, most of these unique drawings were done with a concurrent descriptive style. With the development of literacy, art has as well developed and pictures were well organized like words on a paper which helped in defining the direction of the story more easily.

These educative or descriptive drawings have held various meanings throughout history, and they have widely been used to tell stories or imply an association. Some artists construct their works like cartoons with two or more panels suggesting a timeline. Other artists place elements within a single panel, often with the meaning unclear. The viewer then must resolve the story or make connections between different elements themselves.

Paintings were mostly used in traditional art to cover most of the descriptive scenes. It is easier to represent these in paintings than in sculpture. Illustrating some figures in sculpture becomes more complex and may involve expert work and also may be hard to interpret. There are different types of narratives used today. Artists come up with their own ways to portray stories, represent the space and shape time. Artwork is never limited to one type of story, it is a diversified discipline.

The dawn of technology has brought about great improvements in the field of art. Art has been used in other aspects apart from telling stories. There is a great change compared to the traditional art which focused on a single dimension of descriptive art.

The nature of these special drawings is diverse depending on the creativity and intentions of the artist and the type of narrative to be represented. It can be used in different circumstances in real life. Different cultures apply descriptive art to preserve and represents their cultural undertakings, it is also used in academic perspective for the purpose of empowering students.
