Tips For Choosing Male Voice Over Talents

By Lila Bryant

People use voiceovers for many different types of production. Usually when people think of the term they think of advertising but equally they could be used to narrate documentaries, audio books and so forth. Sometimes there will be the need specifically for male voice over talents and therefore you need to be sure you have the right one.

Voice overs can cover a lot of different productions. This could include voicing animated characters, narrating audio books or providing information for satellite navigation systems. Each of these projects will require a different type of voice so it is important to be aware of this.

Before contacting vocal talents you should check to see where they are located. Some locally based people may be able to come in and visit you if you have your own studio. The advantage with this is that you can talk with them while they are in the booth and the added face to face communication can often be beneficial.

Alternatively you may want to record an audio book for children. Audio books are often used as a way to help children get to sleep. Therefore in this instance you may want someone with a gentler voice in order to ease the children and relax them before they go to bed.

Once you know what you want it becomes easier to write a brief clearly indicating the kind of voice you are looking for. You may choose to approach an independent artist via their own website or social media page. Alternatively you may decide to approach an agency and ask them to choose one of their clients who will be best suited to your brief.

Another vital aspect is the demo. This is your opportunity to hear how they sound and whether it is appropriate for your particular brief. Someone may have a terrific booming voice but if you want something a bit softer and sensitive then this will be largely irrelevant.

In either instance you need to get an audio sample from them. This gives you the chance to listen to their vocal range and whether what they can offer will work for your project. If they are recording from their own studio this becomes especially important as it gives you the opportunity to test the sound quality of their equipment as well. This is vital because ultimately you will be the one judged on the final quality of a project and any poor recording will reflect badly on you whereas choosing someone professional with good quality recording equipment will reflect well.

You should check as wide a range of sources as possible before choosing a vocal artist. Try a couple of agencies and some independent artists. Getting a mixture of different options will make it easier to compare what they have to offer and select something best suited to your needs.
