For Many A Celebrated Music Composer Nyc Was The Favorite Location To Develop Their Career In Music

By Lora Jones

Over the years for many a famed composer nyc has been the source of stimulation, artists and fantastic locations that complemented their creativity. Examining this area of the arts is a source of much pleasure not only for the enthusiast but all music lovers.

New York represents the source of a number of wide-ranging musical genres. Consider punk rock, salsa, disco, and hip hop that all had their origin there. Whilst they did not originate in the city, blues, jazz and rock have all found their homes here and attract a huge number of supporters.

Many believe that it is the presence of so many different and vibrant cultures that is the cause of this massive and successful mix of music styles. Another very important influence on the arts is the flourishing world of classical music, opera and ballet, yet another three styles.

Among the large number of famous composers who have proved themselves within the city, a few will be particularly well known for their contribution. Leonard Bernstein is definitely in this group. Also an accomplished conductor, he performed with the NYC Symphony as well as the Philharmonic Orchestras. His significant classical pieces include Prelude, Fugue and Riffs for solo clarinet and jazz ensemble; and the 1954 Serenade for violin, strings and percussion. Likely it will be his collaboration on the very successful West Side Story musical that for most Bernstein will be admired..

Another artist who stands out is Bob Dylan. As a composer, song writer and through his performances he became a dominant force in the music of the sixties and seventies. Although born in Minnesota, he made New York his home in 1960. Songs like Blowin in the Wind became best sellers and became a means of expression for his opposition to war and social injustice.

Among those who were actually born in NYC and grew up to work there are George Gershwin who wrote the unforgettable melodies Rhapsody in Blue and Summertime. Incredibly Gershwin dropped out of school at age fifteen and started playing professionally in nightclubs around the Tin Pan Alley district. Sadly this great musical talent died of a brain tumour at the young age of thirty eight.

Aaron Copland was born and grew up in Brooklyn right in the heart of the city. An enormous figure in the world of composing, Copland also taught, authored several books and later conducted the performance of his own works with various orchestras. His music was perceived to be in touch with the American people and as such was classified by some as Populist. The pieces Appalachian Spring, Billy the Kid and Rodeo became very successful amongst his fans.

William Schuman is yet another from this era. First wanting to pursue base ball as a living he deferred to his musical talents and composed a huge number of works including eight symphonies. Schuman received a Pulitzer prize for his efforts. For many a composer nyc became the centre of all things music. Looking at stars such as Billy Joel and John Lennon one can see this process still continues today.
