Make Lovely Scarves With Silk Painting Supplies

By Faith Lynch

Painting on silk is one of the most sought after artworks. Not only can the output be beautiful, but the artwork can be worn by people who purchase them. This technique is primarily from Asia, but countries around the world have noticed the technique. Silk painting supplies are essential to begin painting on this type of fabric.

Dyes are the essential ingredient necessary to bring this fabric to life. Of course, you can use regular paints, but these methods cause hardening of the fabric and make them undesirable to wear. Using dye on this delicate fabric is much better, but there are reasons to be careful with dye. Because runs so freely, it can easily become an artistic nightmare.

A vivid coloring dye that is set into the fabric using hot steam is very popular among professionals. The dye is so popular because the user cannot feel any texture differences on the material. This makes the fabric comfortable to wear. Liquid dye is dripped or sprayed onto the fabric, and while the colors are not so bright, they do not leave any difference in texture on the fabric.

The next is thin or watery paints. Fix these liquid paints onto the fabric with a hot iron once they dry. Because they are water based, they are easy to use and produce quicker pictures. The final dye is instant, which means when you set them on the fabric it dries quickly. Most art teachers use this type with students because it works so quickly.

Resist comes in a form of tinted color adhesive, but it will not permanently stick to the fabric. It is made so that you can put it down on the fabric and keep your colors in their designated areas. Because dye is so runny, resist keeps it from running into other colors or unpainted areas. It is important to never leave gaps in the resist, even a small gap.

A hair dryer is important when painting on this type of fabric. Not only will it dry the dye faster, it can also dry the resist faster. Additionally, the hair dryer can prevent dye from spreading to other areas. If you find an off limit area that is receiving color, dry it with a hair dryer then clean the spot up. Use the hair dryer again to dry the canvas.

Using a stretching frame is probably the easiest way to make the fabric canvas. This frame will pull the fabric out so that you can create your design and apply the dye. It helps prevent wrinkles in the fabric, and allows for optimal drying time. You can purchase a stretching frame in a store, or build your own with wood and hooks.

With all the designs available online, there is no end to what you can create on your fabric. Purchase your silk painting supplies online or a local hobby store. Whenever you begin your project, the first thing to do is to put your pattern down first. It is your guide to keep your colors correct and create beautiful artwork.
