Find Out More About Managing Frustration

By Kari Ratliff

If you look up the meaning of frustration, it is an emotional reaction to something that is stopping you from reaching your goal. It is to see if someone is frustrated, by their behavior and reaction. Each individual has to decide if they will find a way round an obstruction, or allow the task or activity to defeat them.

The 2012 Olympics provided inspiring examples of what can be achieved by overcoming obstacles. Disabled athletes were watched by viewers around the world as they found ways to overcame their disabilities and reach for their goals. It must have been obvious to everyone watching that rather than let set backs and frustrations hold them back, these athletes perceived them as a challenge and looked for ways to move towards their goal.

Frustration can manifest in several different ways and to varying degrees. If you are a parent or have responsibility for a small child, you may well have experienced their response when they come across a physical obstacle blocking their path. They either work their way around it, they turn away from it, or they scream and kick against it.

Often a child will cry or have a tantrum because they cannot get what they want. If parents give in to tantrums, the child quickly learns that they can get what they want by behaving in this manner. It becomes a tool that they can use whenever they feel frustrated. However, the child who stops and takes time to work out how to overcome an obstacle can learn from the experience. It can be a interesting and informative exercise to examine how you deal with obstacles in your daily life.

Some individuals become frustrated about the least important things in their day. Missing the bus to work will make you late, but for most, it is not a major catastrophe. It should be no more than a very minor annoyance that is quickly overcome. If you become frustrated and dwell on it, the rest of your day can be affected because you missed the bus.

The obvious solution in the event of a broken alarm clock would be to purchase a new one, or arrange for a friend to give you a wake-up call. Until you do that, you are likely to experience the same negative reactions every day. It can also affect the quality of your sleep, because you may be waking every so often to check the time.

Things that stop you achieving your goal can also cause you to become angry and can lead to violence. It takes a good dose of self-control to keep reactions in check. You may need to regain vent your feelings in some form of exercise or activity that allows you to step back from the situation.

Your self-confidence will take a beating if you continually try to do something and there is something preventing you from doing it. You can keep trying and failing, or you can reassess your approach to the obstacle and come up with a workable solution. It can mean looking at the bigger picture to find a way to overcome feelings of frustration and reach your goal.
