Musical Instruments and Their Country of Origin

By Ruth Williams

Countries around the globe vary in their culture, dress, language and customs. Often a musical instrument has evolved from a particular custom so is synonymous with that cultures and country. Each is highly unique and played all over the world. Continue reading to find out more about instruments of the world and the countries and their origin:

America

The banjo has become one of America's most famous instruments through its well known Country and Western music. The banjo has long since stood as the symbol of South American heritage, and has since found popularity all over the world. For over 200 years, the banjo has been a huge part of American popular music.

Africa

The djembe drum is one of the many rhythmic instruments associated with Africa. The djembe has since become popular worldwide and is played in drumming circles and schools.

Indian Instruments

North India is well known for the Sitar. The sitar bears a number of similarities to the guitar. It has seven main cords and is made up of metal frets. This musical instrument is well travelled - now being taught in the United Kingdom and United States.

Spain

Castanets and Flamenco dancing go hand in hand, making the Castanets one of Spain's most famous instruments. Castanets are hand held instruments used to accompany dancing. They add rhythmic accents through a series of clicks. The Castanets are traditionally made from hardwood but more recently, fibreglass has been used.

Scotland

The musical instrument Scotland is most famous for is the bagpipes. This instrument is recognisable the world over, and produces a highly unique and beautiful sound. As with many other instruments, the bagpipes have been as an accompaniment to dances. The fact that the bagpipes are known for being difficult to play makes them even more appealing.

Australia

Australia is famous for many things including its wildlife and musical instruments. The didgeridoo is probably the most famous musical instrument. Rolf Harris helped raise the profile of the didgeridoo by featuring it on his TV show.

You soon realise how diverse the world's musical instruments are. It is good for children to learn about musical instruments at school as it gives them an insight into the different cultures of people around the world.
