The Particular Fragile Salsa Dance Can Be Turning Out To Be Contagious

By Tony Larren

Today, the salsa dance is everywhere, from college physical education classes to shows like Dancing With The Stars. The Salsa dancing of today is a rich blend of Latin American and Western influences. It is named after the incredible spicy technique that it focused on. The sensuous style and the passion emitted from this particular dance have made it contagious. Everyone wants to give it a try.

Blaring trumpets, the thumping of conga drums and the sounds of cowbells are what give the music the passionate and sultry beat it is known for. The dancers and the music, when performed properly, melt together in to a beautiful mosaic art. Every movement and beat of music emitting sensuality.

This music is a four-beat pattern, which is counted one, two, three, pause, five, six, seven, pause and so on. With the partner who leads, starting on the first count by stepping with the left foot, following right then left. On the fourth count, will pause or tap the right foot. For the next three counts respectively right, left and right. Each step finishes with the transfer of all the weight. The partner, just shifting by four beats, will perform the same moves.

Based on this beat pattern, various styles of the sultry dance emerged. Changing this beat slightly, to an eight beat rhythm, you change the style. This new style is known as On Clave. Son on clave is eight beats, and is either played 2-3 or 3-2 style. A flashier variety of the styles are the Los Angeles style, which started back in the later part of the 1990s and early parts of the 2000s. The most noted difference is the use of 90-degree turns. And the New York style differs in that the breaks are used for directional changes. The modern day salsa incorporates various styles ranging from grit, funk, soothing samba and gyrating statements from hip hop to reggae.

Dance wear for Salsa dancing is rather formal in appearance. Outfits made of hot reds and shades of pink and purple are most common among dancers. Embellishing the outfits with bright color beads, shiny sequins and beautiful rhinestones add an extra flare. The choice of outfit varies from dancer to dancer. Sexy, flaring mini skirts are one option. Another is the long svelte dresses and skirts, with slits all the way up the leg. This is appealing in the sense that it offers a sensual look, while still affording the dancer to have the freedom needed to make the complex leg movements that are so very much apart of the dance. The male partners usually stick to solid colors such as blacks and brown. To spice it up a little, the use of a sheen in the material, or a shimmering material is used. The solid colors usually accentuate what their partners are wearing.

As a beginner in the world of the Salsa dance, your choice of attire may not be quite so formal. If your are going to be wearing skirts, whether long or short, you may want to consider wearing shorts underneath, in case you achieve the flying up effect while turning. As long as you are not going to be bending over a lot, halter tops or tank tops will work. Long hair should be worn up, and to avoid injury to your partner, do not wear your long hair in a ponytail.

Salsa dancing is one of the most romantic and sensuous dances performed today. The pulsing beat of the music, the beauty of the body movements, and the implied intimacy takes your breath away. It is said to be contagious. Watching this spicy dance leaves many people wanting to try it themselves. And more and more people are looking to learn this sultry dance. After all, we all want to experience romance and passion. Salsa dancing gives us the ability to do so, even if only an occasional Saturday night at your favorite Salsa Club.
