Some Tips To Help You Learn How To Read Music

By Judy Jones

While it may seem like a difficult task, reading music is actually not that hard. If you would like to learn how to read music, all it will take is some time and practice. If you have an understanding of music at all then learning to read will be much easier. There are three basic elements in music that are notated on written music, rhythm, melody and harmony. These are the traits that make music sound the way it does. You will need to spend a decent amount of time practicing reading music in order to be good at it. It is also important that you practice reading music along with other musicians.

Rhythm is the most fundamental concept of music. It is notated on sheet music by different notes. There are whole notes, half notes, quarter notes, eighth notes, sixteenth notes and so on. The many kind of notes all look different and all indicate rhythm in music.

Melody is another musical concept that is indicated on sheet music. Melody has to do with the pitches that are being played, like high pitched notes or low pitched notes. The lower the pitch of the note, the lower it will sit on the musical staff (the five horizontal lines you see on written music).

Harmony is a little more complex of an idea. Harmony relates to the idea of playing more than one note at the same time. When you play two or more notes together, you will hear a harmony between the notes. Some harmony is consonant and pleasant sounding, while other harmony can be very dissonant.

Just like learning to play an instrument, when you are learning to read music, you should try to practice a lot. If you put some time into reading music every day, you will certainly see an improvement. It is best to practice reading music by playing things that are unfamiliar. This is known as sight reading.

It is also best to practice reading music in a setting with other musicians. Playing with other musicians will make it so you have to keep up and not loose track of the time or the pitch. If you do, then you will quickly notice that you are not in the same place as the other musicians.

There are a lot of great resources available online to help you learn to read music. Take time to not only learn about how to read, but to listen to music and watch videos.
