General Information On Immigration In Chicago

By Elizabeth Smith

The US as a country does not seem to be a habitat for a particular group of individuals only. It is made up of many immigrants from all walks of life be it Latinos, Europeans or even Africans. Of all states in the US, Chicago appears to be the city that has learned and taken much from the mother country. It is a city which has the largest number of immigrants making up the highest percentage of its population; hence, the various cases of immigration in Chicago.

Being a metropolitan state, it is very clear that everything that happens within this state comes from somewhere foreign. The markets, the restaurants, and shops have unique things portraying the imported cultures. In schools, with children from all parts of the world, it is common to find that the different languages spoken by the student may sum up to a hundred.

The importance of these immigrants is something that should not be taken for granted. These migrants have been making the population of that state steady. They come in large numbers that they can replace the dying and aging natives born in this land. There is always a remnant that leads to a steady growth of this population.

The influx of immigrants in this vicinity did not start any time near. This migration was existing by the mid 18s. The earliest immigrants in this state came to offer skilled labor in the developing of this state. They mostly came from Germany, England, Sweden, and Norway. In 1840s, it became the 92nd city with the highest population. The numbers increased and in twenty years time it was number nine.

The immigrants have played a pivotal role in the day to day activities of this state. The many cultures are a sign of the diverged society that views the land as the point of convergence. Every evening different streets may be observed to have some sought of pass time activities that they used to do back in their mother country. There are several museums in Chicago that share the history and culture of where its people have come from.

Chicagos economy cannot go anywhere without the input that comes from immigrants. It is a state where all kinds of labor are readily available ranging from skilled to non-skilled labor. The immigrants own the many businesses that are operational in most parts of this land. They even have been able to start and own many large firms in that area.

The demographical data recorded has taken a different twist in Chicago. The increased population growth that people are used to in this state has become the direct opposite with a declining population recorded in the last census. The Mexican immigrants who were the majority have reduced. In fact, in the last four-year, more Mexicans have run away from this than those who came in.

There are two main reasons attributed to this decline. One is about the reduced birth rate which has led to the emergence of a population comprising many seniors. There is also the policy against undocumented immigrants. This has made most Mexican immigrants especially to be afraid of immigrating leading to their decreasing number.
