If you are on a performance, you should never drink any caffeinated beverages before the performance. You have to avoid it as much as you can.

The best techniques when it comes to singing are those that make you feel at ease and comfortable. If you are feeling a strain in what you are doing, then you might be doing something wrong. Do not strain yourself. If a technique is hurting you, then you better find an alternative for it.
