Hindi Films Going the International Way

By Kevin Fernandez

India has been finding its niche in the world cinema market over some years. A lot of directors have roped in knowledgeable technical crew from American film industry to give their film an international feel. Bollywood is growing in its fan following in a lot of foreign countries. Many producers, not only in the north, but also in the south are trying to grow their business on the increasing popularity of Indian movies in the international market.

Indian cinema has recently seen an obsession with the stories of superheroes. Producers have been putting their best foot forward to make their films look like an English movie with newest methods. Tollywood saw the costliest movie ever to be made in India through Robot featuring the superstar Rajnikanth. Shankar, the director, roped in some of the talented technical people from Hollywood for his Robot. Rajnikanth, who loves the fame among Japanese audiences, enjoyed a good time with 'Robot' becoming a huge success in both Tamil and Hindi (the dubbed version).

Following this strategy of the south is Hindi movie industry with new superhero stories and their acts of heroism. The Shah Rukh Khan starrer, 'Ra One', is believed to topple 'Robot' as the most expensive film made in India. And then there is the Hrithik Roshan starrer 'Krrish 2', the second part 'Krrish', yet another in a line of superhero movies. Hollywood technical experts have been hired by the film directors just like Shankar did it for his film Robot. David Benullo has been asked to be a part of the film from the moviemaking hotspot to write the script for 'Ra One' and Akon, the pop singer has recorded a song for the film. Krrish 2 and Ra One can compete with movies from the American film industry in the genre of superhero movies.

Apart from employing technical experts of the American film industry, Hindi movies have also roped in stars from Hollywood. Previous year, Kites, which featured the versatile actor Hrithik Roshan also featured the supermodel hailing from Brazil, Barbara Mori. However the film did not succeed commercially and failed to pull in the crowd. Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara, a forthcoming Hindi film of Zoya Akhtar has international technicians. The film has an ensemble cast including Hrithik, Farhan Akhtar and Abhay Deol in the male lead. The movie is shot in Spain and predictably, has a Spanish co-star Ariadna Cabrol, as one of the main female actresses and has cinematography by Carlos Catalan from Barcelona.

Building tie-ups with technicians and stars from the Hollywood, Indian film industry, especially Hindi movie industry, is foraying into the international movie market. How far it can rival American film industry is yet to be seen, as audiences are waiting for the release of these movies.
